Dr. Jānis Vucāns is working for Ventspils University Collegesince 1998. Currently he possesses the positions ofProfessor in Business Administration and Leading Researcher of the Engineering Research Institute “Ventspils International Radio-Astronomy Centre”. From 2000 to 2010 he was the Rector of this higher education and research institution. He has academic background in Applied Mathematics, namely - Optimization Theory, and in Business Administration, namely - Financial Management and Business Macro Environment.

Dr. Vucāns has a long lasting experience of academic work also in the University of Latvia (1979-2005), as well in the University of Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris VI, 1990-1991) and University of Geneve (1996). He has visited, in the frame of academic exchange programs, a number of universities in Finland, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Turkey, Greece etc. He has been also the General Manager for a number of national and international research projects in the fields of Business Administration and Information Technologies.

He is one of the founders of Inter-University Doctoral study program in Business Administration, which has been realized on the basis of cooperation between Riga International School of Economics and Business Administration, BA School of Business and Finance and Ventspils University College.

Since 2010 Dr. Jānis Vucāns simultaneously to his academic career is the elected member of the Saeima (Parliament) of Republic of Latvia. He has been the Vice-Speaker and Deputy Secretary of the Parliament, as well the Chairman of Education, Culture and Science Committee. Currently he is the Chairman of the Budget and Finance (Taxation ) Committee. He also is the President of two inter-parliamentary organizations – Baltic Assembly and Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference.
